THESIS WORK

Seven Deadly Spins

Video rendering of Illustrator drawings and Photoshop animations For my final Thesis project, I created animated book covers representing each of the Seven Deadly Sins with a fairy tale story that contains one or more characters who emulate the corresponding sin.
Many of our favorite Disney movies were based on folk tales, but did not have the fairy tale endings we dream about. The original versions of these stories are filled with scenes and plot twists that would remind us more of a horror film than a happily ever after. These tales were not originally intended to simply entertain, but also to educate society about the consequences of evil deeds. Just as these terrifying cautionary tales have been rewritten into Disney fantasies, so have the grave deadly sins been redefined into glamorized actions. The Seven Deadly Sins were originally created as lessons and warnings to help people avoid the temptations of sin, but overtime it seems that the darkness and grave nature of them have been lost. In modern society, these grim acts have been reconstructed into good, and sometimes even honorable, actions. People are so intent on ignoring their own faults that these sins are not being taken seriously or even recognized for what they are. The symbolism from popular fairy tales is meant to reflect how common these deadly sins are in our world today, but because they have become so “normal”, the severity and dark side of them is often dismissed. In the same way, these tales have been revised and rewritten so many times and to such great extents that many people today do not even know where the stories originated from or the true meanings behind them.
